MANU CHANDAK; ‘Kyon Ki baat hi sabko sab batati hai’. Manu shares his thoughts about an artist’s responsibility in society and creates a thin line between past, present and the future and how our choices impact our responsibilities. He shares his experience about life as an art. He believes that you are responsible for your own responsibilities. And as they say it’s the choices that make a man, we are all just a bundle of choices, and that’s what responsibilities are, choices! So let’s listen to the conversation between Nitin Jain & Manu Chandak and know more about art, artists and their responsibility towards society.

MANU – Main radio pe aaj Aakashwaani sun raha tha, aur vivid bharti ka programme, usmein ek natak aat hai, ‘Hawa Mahal’, toh usmein ek naatak chalta hai. Wo natak likha hua tha gulzar sahab ka, toh Gulzar ki jo kahani thi wo thi toh kuch bhi, magar us kahaani ko likhne ke peeche ki bhi ek kahaani thi jo radio pe bataai.
NITIN – Gajab!
MANU – Wo itni interesting thi ki us kahaani ko likhte hue gulzar, progressive writers association ke saath jude hue the. Aur unke daur mein sab lok ek kism ke sawal se joojh rahe the. Sab log progressive writers, nayi duniya, aur kuch sawaal hotein hain jo aapke saamne as a challenge aatein hain. Tab ek sawaal aaya ki – ek artist ki ek society ke andar kya responsibilty hai? Koi zimmedari hai kalakar ki ya nahi? Toh uska kisi ke paas jawab nahi tha, lekin Gulzaar bole ki jawaab toh main nhn keh sakta ki mere paas hai ya nhn, magar maine jawaab sochte soche ek kahaani banayi thi. Toh ye ek bahut important cheez thi aur mere dimaag mein bhi wo kahaani aayi thi. Wo sawal aise hi tha. Main soch raha tha ki kya kisi ki bhi kya zimmedari hoti hai ek society ko banane mein, system ko chalane mein.
NITIN – Khaas Kar ke jinko hum wo artist breed boltein hain, jo log apna right hand side waala dimaag zyaada use kartein hain.
MANU – Right hand side wala ho ya left hand side waala, art is just perceiving anything in a particular format with just appeals and compliments every other thing. That’s what art is ! Sabko ek saath please kardena, rijhaa dena. Kalakar ko hum kya kehte hain, jo ek kaam karta hai aur 100 logo ko ek saath mazaa aajata hai. 100 log ko ek saath khush karna mushkil hai.
NITIN – Bilkul !
MANU – Hum aam zindagi mein ek aadmi ko khush karte hain ek baar mein aur wo bhi bahot mushkil se. Ek saath 4 logon ko khush rakhna, sabhi ki life ka problem yahi hai, thats a heavy call.
Khaana banana ek art hai. Ghar mein ek aadmi multi-tasking kare tab wo art hai. Pure formula ke saath, jaise baking ko bolte hai precision, baking ko art nahi bolte. Cooking is more of an art. Art is what pleases so many people at the same time, doing with so many different elements at the same moment.
NITIN – So you tell about your art experiences, since you are a diversified artist. ‘Diversified’ hata deta hoon, keval artist use karta hoon.
MANU – I would still say ki every other person is an artist in a way that life is an art in itself, so you call it life for art’s sake or art for life’s sake. Har ek aadmi jo poore time se, poora jeewan nikaalne ki koshish karta hai, paida hone ke baad se, chahe wo padh kar ke, uske baad kisi aur ke kehne pe kuch aur kar-kar ke, uske baad khud ke man se kuch aur karke. Itni saari cheezein hain, aur wo ek ek task jo hota hai chota-chota uske andar jab nayi-nayi cheezein jab appke dimaag mein ek process chal raha hai. Too much information and too much data. Aapka dimaag ek machine hai, micro-processor ki tarah kaam koga shayad, iske andar chote chote task as a time stamp ki tarah jama ho jaatein hain, memories mein. Aur unhi memories ke saath hum play karte rehte hain, kuch memories ko hum lessons bol detein hain, jinko hum present mein apply karne ke liye future ki planning karte rehte hain.
That’s what art is, to be in all three time zones, past, present and future. Time travelling at the same moment, every other moment you are living.
NITIN – Art ke itna saare flavors aur itne saare colors mujhe lagta hai aaj tak humare saath ke doston ne nhn sune honge.
MANU – I rather think that, responsibility of any individual is firstly to be an individualistic self. Forming an ideology for the scenarios. Ek hota haina ki main abhi ke time zone pe baith karke, sirf main abhi ke baare mein sochoonga, toh mere liye shayad sab kuch sahi hai aur shayad agla moment nhn hoga. Lekin iska jab main judgement karne baithta hoon, jab responsibility ki baat aati hai toh bhavishya ki baat hoti hai. Responsibility future se associated hai directly, present se nhn, because living in the present moment was the thing, then the next moment didn’t even matter. But when we talk about responsibility, it’s about a futuristic approach.
Ab do baatein hain, ek toh ye ki aap futuristic approach ke saath jeete hi nhn, toh aapke liye wo bhi sahi hai. Responsibility aapki kopi rahi nhn, kyunki aapne choose kiya hai. Doosra aapne choose kiya hai ki, when you choose the future over the present. Jab aapka lifestyle, aapki ideology, aapka mindset waisa hi hai then yes! You choose your own responsibilities, jo aapko chunni hai, jitni aapko chunni hai. We are responsible for our own responsibilities, I would say. Because choices make the man as they say. We are all just a bundle of choices and thats what responsibilities are, choices what else!
NITIN – Choices vs situations?
MANU – For sure! That’s an interesting cut to that, choices vs the situations. More or less, our choices make the situations as they are.
NITIN – And situations make our choices !
MANU – But that’s what the game is, past, present and the future. Right now is the situation which is caused by the past, because of the choice you had made in the past, and then when you are in this situation you are actually trying to make a choice for the future that’s what it is. Dangling in the present, past and future.
NITIN – Past, present aur future ka ek circle hai, jisko Yin and Yang aur jo positive aur negative forces, push aur pull karte hain, wo choice aur situation hain.
MANU – Equilibrium hai wo jo beech ki jagah haina, jahan pe aapke paas past ki yaad aur uski seekh hoti hai. Jisko yaad ko seekh bhi bol detein hain kayi baar. Aur future ka ek formula hota hai, jiske andar aap saare variables aur constant ko put karte jaate ho. Aur aap ye kaam karte ho beech mein khade rehke, jahan pe zero hai, aur aap plus bhi jaate ho aur minus bhi.
NITIN – Mujhe isi baat pe ek quote yaad aa gayi, infact kihi hai bilkul mere saamne. ‘Yesterday was a history, today is a mystery, today is a gift that’s why we call it a present.’
So aaj ke naam humara ye vartalap, so phir mileinge ek nayi baat ke saath. Shabba Khair ! Jald mulakaat.
